    things as marriage, divorce, the death of a loved one, losing a job or having a baby as a life transition that can be significant in terms of how one  feels. All of those things can have economic and psychological consequences that cause people to rethink their lives and how they will continue to live. While personal events can create  dramatic results in ones life, there are other events that are common to many such as war or a natural disaster. These things affect many people. For instance, a community  that goes through a hurricane must deal with loss of community life, sometimes the loss of a home or even the loss of friends or family. When the World  Trade Center buildings were knocked down, life changed immeasurably for many people. Of course, some say the economy was on a downward trend anyway, and unemployment was rising in August  of 2001. Yet, there was a tremendous change which affects primarily the people of New York, but also the people of America. In fact the event affects the world, but  there was a ripple effect. Those in the thick of it--who lived in lower Manhattan--would feel the brunt of the attack as they lost loved ones, pets, or their homes.  Those who lived in other parts of Manhattan were also worried about the people in the affected sections. The whole city suffered economically and psychologically in the initial days, something  that continues to linger. And while the New York metropolitan area suffered a great deal in terms of job loss and its overall economy, Americans felt their pain as  they watched events unfold. The stock market was closed for days. Americans were devastated and the attacks involved not only New York City, but Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. where planes
