    Summary of the research paper:

    A 7 page proposal for a pilot program combining nutritional and activity information for preteens, as well as education in the tools that marketers use to sell nutritionally bankrupt foods to children and their families. There are times that the phrase, “Knowledge is power,” is misused and misleading. This is not one of those situations, however. Marketers pay immediate and intense heed to consumer wishes when consumers are “voting with dollars” on the success of their various enticements to buy. Training children to recognize marketing pressures empowers them to make better choices for themselves, while also providing information that parents can use to reinforce the messages promoted.     electronic games, uncertain dangers in urban settings, parents busy schedules and a plethora of other influences all combine to contribute to creating increasing obesity in children. Children are more  sedentary than at any other time, and marketers believe there is great value in marketing directly to those efficient influencers of parents. The cost of marketing directly to children  now tops $12 billion annually (Selling to, 2002), and increasing numbers of health professionals believe that todays children "is a generation destined for psychosocial and physical problems" (Selling to, 2002;  p. 959). Congress has recognized both the immediate problem of increasing rates of childhood obesity as well as the long-term implications for the  state of public health in the United States. In an effort to address both the short- and long-term problems of health implications, the House passed the Healthy Children Through  Better Nutrition Act of 2003 (H.R.3416); the Senate concurs. The Act makes provisions encouraging the private sector to work for the goal of reducing incidence of childhood obesity and  for better educating children and their families in the benefits of nutrition and exercise, which are the goals of the proposed project. Funding Agency  The funding agency chosen for this program is the Childrens Aid Society, a nonprofit organization that has been dedicated to improving the lives of New Yorks children for more  than 150 years. The organizations mission is "To ensure the physical and emotional well being of children and families, and to provide each child with the support and opportunities  needed to become a happy, healthy and productive adult" (Our Mission, 2004). The agency already has experience in promoting healthy lifestyle habits among
