academic achievement in African American students. Statement of the Problem This study relates to the impact of African American culture on the
academic achievement of minority students. Numerous research studies indicate that culture plays a significant role in the in the academic achievement of minority students (Ladson-Billings, 1995; Ogbu, 1995; Perry, Steele
and Hillard, 2003; Rucker and Genderson, 2003). Though significant efforts have been made to address racial inequalities in educational pedagogy, there continues to be a discrepancy in performance levels of
African Americans as compared to their white, Anglo-European counterparts in the United States. Research Questions The following research questions will be addressed in this study: 1.
What is the link between culture and academic achievement for African American students? 2. Does African American cultures presence in the classroom have a significant influence on
the academic achievement of African American students? 3. Can a culturally sensitive or culturally influenced pedagogy positively impact outcomes for African American learners? The
goal of this study is to better understand the impact of African American culture on the academic achievement of minority students and consider the impacts of culturally relevant teaching. This
study will provide a body of information to better understand the importance and relevance of culture to the academic success of minority students. The primary research in this study will
include exploring the link between academic achievement and the inclusion of culture in the curriculum for African Americans and minority college students. Research Design The
