    and magazines, but that it has been explored in depth, and arguably better, in works of literature and poetry. What literature can give to a subject is an in-depth dissection  with opinions and examples woven into a palatable medium. In both the novels, Gaines Lesson Before Dying and Morrisons, Sula, the idea and the way in which the protagonists deal  with the issue of race is different, but the result is the same. So, a student might write that the same topic can have many different interpretations. The student  might do well to keep in mind, also, the topics that Gaines brings out in this book, namely those comments about the judicial system, education is not the ultimate escape  from racism, the true definition of humanity, loss of self identity with ethnic causes, Jefferson as a Christ figure, and whether or not the characters main goal is achieved. For  sake of instruction, then, the students paper may be divided up into four sections. The first should be the introduction which encompasses the major themes of the paper. Secondly, a  brief summary of the main points of the first novel should be covered. Next, the second novel, Sula by Toni Morrison should be discussed in identical fashion. The following sections  would then include the contrast and comparison on how the characters dealt with racism and their subjectivity to it. Finally, the conclusion should take all the above sections, summarize them  briefly, and put forth a few of the students own ideas based on his or her understanding of the text and its issues. In the treatment of this topic, it  may serve the student well to keep the basic summary of each book in mind, or to at least present an abbreviated synopsis of the book. A Lesson Before Dying
