The branding itself will add value to the product with the increased positive perception  that is created. Examples of this are seen globally, from Coca-Cola and McDonalds through to Nike and Reebok. However, brands can also age, or develop history and just as products  have a life cycle so do brands. The key to successful long life brands and products are the renew or re-brand the product or image before the decline sets in  (Hooley wt al, 1998). All market will need re-branding to take place in order to avoid decline, the patterns may have similarities and re-branding strategies nay be the same  as other countries, alternatively there may also be variations in the time frame and the way that re-banding takes pace which reflect the local culture and different values of the  area. The purpose of this paper is to look at the theories behind re-branding and how it may occur with standardised or localised strategies and ask which approach is  the best for Sri Lanka. In this paper we will be asking how this re-branding is most likely to occur in Sri Lanka and which is most likely to succeed.  Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean and has a developing economy, the GDP is $3,700 per capita, with 53.8% of income coming from services and the  economy growing at 5.5% per annum (CIA, 2005). This indicates an economy where there is both current and future potential, so re-branding is a worthwhile exercise where consumer spending is  taking place and likely to increase. As the economy grows the demand is also likely to increase and business internal to the country and those external the country will wish
