    toward that end. Interestingly, this is clearly evident as the political ideology of those who committed the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001. The realist theory clearly describes  the outlook of Bin Laden and those who participated in the terror against the U.S. How Does the Realist Theory of International Relations Explain the Events of 9/11?  Political realism assumes that power is the primary end of political action, whether in the domestic or international arena (Political Realism, 2002).  At the international level, this theory suggests that nation states are the primary agents and should maximize their power (Political Realism, 2002, See also An Analysis of The Empire  of Civil Society, 2002). Clearly, the overall defining ideology of this theory is power and self-interest (Political Realism, 2002). "Political realism in essence reduces to the political-ethical principle  that might is right" (Political Realism, 2002). "The realist theory of international relations claims that interactions between countries are based on relationships of power, and not on the  characteristics of individual states" (Democratic Peace, 2002). Obviously, this omits such concepts as loyalty, friendship and morality from the equation of these relationships (Democratic Peace, 2002). This is  the very opposite of democracy which strives for peaceful relations - evidenced by an absence of war and tyranny (Democratic Peace, 2002).  Many believe this theory has social Darwinism at its roots - a theory which relies on the idea of survival of the fittest (Political Realism, 2002). Translating  that idea into the political arena renders the beliefs that only the strongest political entities survive (Political Realism, 2002).
