    of religious belief; however, their blatant disregard for other religious tenets was instrumental in urging Minister Roger Williams and a group of his followers to leave Massachusetts in order to  seek out their own religious freedom. Their quest lead them to Rhode Island in 1636 where they formed a colony to be the first of its kind that removed  any connection between church and state, a concept that was ultimately to become a primary principles of contemporary United States government. Williams was not met with a great deal  of optimism when he suggested church and state should be separated; in fact, what the people called a perilous assault against authority earned him a one-way ticket out of the  colony once and for all. Williams also openly questioned why the Indians were forced to give up their land for the incoming settlers; when he was ousted from the  colony, he sought refuge with the very people he tried to protect. Once there, he built his own colony where anyone who chose to settle there was ensured religious  freedom and the separation of church and state (Reilly, 2007). II. JAPAN Japans religion through the centuries has seen a rather constant  existence, with Buddhism establishing itself as a primary staple of belief and stimulating landscape art, portraits and battle scene scrolls. In 1549, Jesuit missionary Saint Francis Xavier attempted to  spread Christianity throughout Japan after having make friends with a Japanese gentleman; however, the code of humble poverty embraced by the Jesuit did not interest the Japanese. The Buddhist  monasteries served as a location for art instruction, allowing for imaginative artists to explore their inherent talent. We tend to think of religions as fixed phenomena; eternal and unchanging.
