alcohol and illicit drugs has been determined to contribute substantially to the disease burden and mortality rate of young people between the ages of 15 and 29 (Toumbourou, et al,
2007). The effects of drugs and alcohol can interfere with the "healthy development of body, brain and behavior" for growing adolescents (Toumbourou, et al, 2007, p. 1391). A study conducted
by Williams, et al (2007) highlights the need to address this problem, particularly in regards to minority youth, as academic performance among this cohort continues to be a cause for
concern. The deficits in academic performance, for example, among African American youth, have "damaging consequences on African American families and communities" (Williams, et al, 2007, p. 151). In todays
knowledge-based economy, some sort of post-secondary school education is prerequisite for employment and job security and a high school diploma (or its equivalent) is a necessary requirement for university or
college admittance. While obtainment of a high school diploma does not necessarily guarantee employment, it has a direct effect on enhancing its probability and having a high school diploma has
been shown to beneficially affect lifetime earning (Williams, et al, 2007). Therefore, factors that interfere with academic success, such as drugs and/or alcohol use among adolescents can have a detrimental
effect on academic success (Williams, et al, 2007). The proposed research study, first of all, summarizes literature pertaining to substance use interventions aimed at middle and high school youth,
