Introduction 1.1 Background When undertaking security and risk management there is a tendency to consider the major  threats, but the reality is that smaller threats may have a much greater potential impact on a business. A significant source of threat will be the employees, and while under  performance and motivation may be a risk, this is the realm of the human resource managers. However, there is a potentially greater threat which represents more than an opportunity threat;  employee theft, which may range in scale from small time pilfering of small items though to large scale fraud. The cost for the employer can be potentially hundreds, thousands and  even millions of pounds (Hogsett and Radig, 1994). 1.2 Aims and Objectives The main aim of the research will be to identify the main causes of theft in employees  in the UK, so that the knowledge can be used to develop suitable policies that will reduce this risk. In order to undertake this the following aims will need to  be fulfilled * To define theft and types of theft * To assess the level of the problem * Identify factors that may influence employee attitudes to making theft acceptable  an acceptable value * Identify the influences that need to be present to stimulate an employees decision to steal from their employer * Identify relevant influencing factors that facilitate theft  taking place from an employer. * The effectives of preventative measures which have been adopted in the commercial environment. 1.3 Justification for the Study  Employee theft is a significant problem. In the UK it is estimated that in the UK retail sector employee theft accounts for 36.8% of all product
