In this era of downsizing and efforts to increase internal operating efficiency, it almost seems paradoxical that organizations seek means of retaining employees. The great  downsizing waves that occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s were not isolated or temporary fixes, but would become entrenched in the list of options available to management.  What many organizations failed to recognize was the effect that downsizing would have not on those employees who lost their jobs, but on those who did not (Baruch and Hind,  2000). One of the primary issues of management today focuses on retaining remaining employees and motivating them to maximum level possible. The purpose of this proposed research will  be to assess the effects of management style on employee commitment and motivation. Problem Statement Organizations must operate as efficiently as possible in  todays highly competitive business environment. Management style typically is accepted as playing a significant role within the organization. The problem to be investigated is to assess whether that  common belief is true. Research Question and Importance of the Research Does management style affect employee effectiveness? If so, which management style  is more conducive to increased employee efficiency? Independent variables include management style; dependent variables include employee response. The importance of the research  is that all organizations are required to be as efficient as possible in todays business environment. Whatever information they can gain toward achieving this end will only be beneficial  for them. The objective of this research is to determine which general management style results in the most effective operation of the organization.
