    who brought nothing but fear and treachery to England, others contend that his legacy has been much maligned by faulty accounts and historical alterations. Josephine Tey is one such  author whose treatment of Richard III is more than kind; with the help of her protagonist detective Alan Grant, Tey works literary magic in The Daughter of Time to illustrate  her perception of a man whose character she defends. Desmond Seward, on the other hand, takes a more pragmatic approach to uncovering the truth of Richards legacy in Richard  III: Englands Black Legend, contending that his murderous ways placed a significantly black mark upon this period of English history. Was Richard III good or evil, or perhaps a  bit of both? This is what the reader is left to determine after reading the two completely diverse accounts. II. DIFFERING PERSPECTIVES  Literary history demonstrates that good and evil do not exist merely in people who are either good or evil but rather as abstract forces battling within them. As  a direct result, readers of such works as Tey and Sewards find few characters who can be called good or evil exclusively, with particular emphasis upon Richard III. A  relevant phrase within the literary world that relates to the overall concept of good and evil as it is portrayed in these two books is that of the human condition,  which refers -- quite logically -- to the definition of being human. Analyzing the notion of good and evil within The Daughter of Time and Richard III: Englands Black  Legend, one finds that the human condition is a regular consideration, insofar as humanity is constantly in question: Is Man strong or weak, good or evil, redeemed or condemned, honorable
