In all, Moses held 14 state,  regional and city offices ranching from city parks commissioner to construction coordinator. In order to understand the significance of Moses accomplishment, the  nature of New York City, itself, should be understood. What we generally think of as "New York City" is located on four islands. Only one of the five boroughs?the Bronx?is  actually attached to the mainland of the United States. Therefore there was a need in the early part of this century to bring the city together, as a whole. This  was largely done with bridges. Robert Moses was the official responsible for the building of every one of New Yorks great bridges, which served to link its various parts  beginning in 1917. He built the Verrazano Bridge, the Triborough Bridge, the Bronx Whitestone, the Throgs Neck, the Henry Hudson, the Crossbay, and the Marine Parkway. Additionally, Moses connected the  city with roads. He built everyone of the expressways that ran across the city?the Long Island Expressway, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway?all of these great roads owe their existence to Moses. Additionally,  he built the eleven parkways that run through the city and out towards the suburban counties on Long Island. All together, Moses built 627 miles of expressways and parkways. Moses  can also be thanked for the Lincoln Center, the United Nations, the Fordham, Pratt, and Long Island University campuses, as well as at least a dozen mammoth urban renewal projects  (Caro 20). When Robert Moses began building state parks and parkways in the1920s, twenty-nine states didnt have a single state park, and six had only one each. Those that
