and it has been estimated that approximately 20% of Australian will be diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives (SANE Australia, 2010). With such as high prevalence  level is it unsurprising that counsellors are often part of a multidisciplinary approach to helping and treating those who suffer from depression. One approach which has received attention is  the use of cogitative behavioural therapy (CBT). The aim of this research is to assess the value of CBT in treating patients with depression, comparing it to other approaches to  determine hpw useful CBT is. 1.1 Research Hypothesis In order to study this phenomenon the use of a hypothesis will be useful to assess the actual impact of  CBT. The Hypothesis will be H1 = Patients suffering from depression will show present better recovery characteristics compared to similar patients who are not receiving CBT. If  there is an hypothesis there also needs to be a null hypothesis that will be tested, this has the assumption that the original hypothesis is not true, here the null  hypothesis will be H0 = Patients suffering from depression and being treated with CBT will not show superior recovery characteristics compared to similar patients that are not receiving CBT.  In order to undertake this research the following questions will need to be answered * How is depression defined? * What is CBT? * How may CBT help patients/clients  with depression? * What impact does CBT have on patients with depression? * How or does the outcome for patients/clients receiving CBT differ from patients who do not? 1.2 Justification  of Research The research is important as depression is a major condition within modern society, it can be debilitating and have a wide impact, not only on the patient/client,
