history, religion has played a major and sustaining factor in is life. The fact that mankind seems to have an inherent need or desire for a spiritual life suggests, in
itself that religion fulfils and need for the human being and that therefore, religion matters. Is religion worthwhile? This is perhaps the question that should be asked and answered
first and foremost. Take nearly any of the world religions and one overriding question can be asked of any of them: What are they attempting to accomplish? Many would suggest
that religion was an invention by mankind in an attempt to explain the Universe, and yet, with the advent of Science (which does a fine job of explaining the Universe)
religion persists. Perhaps it can be said that religion is an attempt to make the average persons lives easier, happier and less filled with anger and destructive tendencies. However,
if one believes that, then one only gets half of the picture where religion is concerned. What exactly does the belief in a Higher Power offer to the human being
that they should seek out the experience throughout the centuries? It obviously has value. What does religion offer mankind? It should be said that religion seems to offer a ready
and strong source of comfort during times of extreme and intense suffering. People embrace religion because they are afraid of dying; they are afraid to believe that dead is
dead. This is another argument which comes from people with atheistic tendencies. It is true that the average person would like a release from suffering and, eventually, of death. The
human being is wired to avoid unpleasant thoughts or stimulus and to seek out that which is pleasurable. Religion, then, offers comfort and hope where, in contrast, there is none.
