Following that, well generate a strategy for continued growth for the next several years.  Southwest Airlines is a low-cost, no-frills, no-reserved-seats airline known for its short-haul schedules and profitability (Gilmer, 2010). The carrier serves 70 cities in 35  states, preferring to fly into smaller airports to avoid the congestion of the larger hubs (Gilmer, 2010). SWOT Strengths Operating Strategy.  The company makes its living on a point-to-point model, versus the hub-and-spoke model favored by the major U.S. airlines (Datamonitor: Southwest Airlines, 2010). The point-to-point model means fewer congestion delays  and total trip times, which means a better on-time record. Downtown airports. This also adds to the time savings, as these  airports are less congested than the larger airports. This means SWA can fly in and fly out quickly. Fleet operations. The company  simplifies scheduling, maintenance, flight operation and training by operating one aircraft, the Boeing 737 (Datamonitor: Southwest Airlines, 2010).
