Introduction For a firm to develop strategies and consider how to compete there is the  need for the companys core competences and the potential areas of strengths and weakness to be understood, along with the companys position in the market place. There are many influences  on a company and several models have bee developed to examine these. Models such as PEST and Porters Five Forces al look at specific elements of a business, for  example, PEST looks at the macro influences and a Porters Five Forces looks at the industry in which the business operates. These are limited models, one model that can include  many of the aspects of these models, if they are relevant to the bus ness and still provide a god framework is the SWOT analysis. This is an older analysis  model which gives a good framework by looking at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that a business faces. These include the macro and micro influences and the framework also  provides a method of analysis by pairing up the different elements, for example, looking at how strengths may overcome weakness, help build on opportunities and minimise exposure to threats.  There are few limitation on the model, unlike other models and it is suitable for either a broad analysis or use in a
