A healthy food selection in school cafeterias should be  mandatory because children need to eat healthy food in order to feel good and, therefore, learn better. The American lifestyle of sedentary occupations and leisure activities, combined with a diet  that is high in fat and calories, but low on nutrition, have caused overweight/obesity to achieve epidemic proportions, even among children and adolescents.  The American Obesity Association reported in 2005 that 30.3 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 19 were either overweight or obese in 2000 (Grainger, Senauer and  Runge, 2007). Obesity is associated with a myriad of negative health consequences, which range from developing type 2 diabetes to cardiovascular disease. As this indicates, the problem, once it develops,  becomes very complicated, but the solution is actually quite simple. Initiate children to good health habits by providing them with school lunches  that are healthy. This is a main point made by Jamie Oliver in his campaign to wean America away from fattening processed foods and back to cooking healthy meals. Through  federal meal programs, taxpayer dollars provide 30.5 million American school children with lunches that consist mainly of processed foods, that is, "Cheap nuggets, fries and snack [that] have no place  in the school system" (Oliver, 2010). Oliver (2010) proposes that government regulations should require that food served in American schools should be healthy and part of a balanced diet.
