    diligence after Columbine--the concept that ones children are in danger at school is alarming. It could be that the dangers are blown out of proportion. After all, the number of  serious occurrences are probably less than a dozen and there are thousands of schools and millions of children. The odds of being hurt in school are probably less than they  are just crossing the street. Still, some schools have implemented new policies since Columbine which include metal detectors, new rules, and enhanced security in various forms. Another aspect of prevention  is profiling. Profiling is controversial and in the real world--as opposed to the school culture--profiling is not only construed as morally wrong, it is illegal in many situations. While the  school issue has faded to some extent as there has been a lack of activity, since 911, the profiling issue has surfaced because the enemy is now Muslim. Although it  is true that there are many Muslims in the United States that are perfectly good citizens and law abiding Americans, the terrorists were Muslims. They were also Middle Eastern. Anyone  with a swarthy complexion, a head turban or a connection with Islam is suspect. In many ways, this type of stereotyping is wrong. If for example a crime was  committed by a black gang, it would be wrong to profile blacks for all crime. While that is a nice analogy it is ironically one that is both absurd but  true. In the United States it seems as if media has played up the black male stereotype, something that has led to the fear of young black men. It is  to some extent a self-fulfilling prophesy in that when one is looking for black suspects, they will find black men doing something wrong. In other words, they pass by the
