    colonization. It primarily revolves around the character of Mustafa Saeed and the first person narrator who remains unknown. As these two individuals do what they can to fit in the  North and South, Europe and Africa, we see many other subtle elements come into play, one of which is competition: "The competition between the north and south in both the  minds of Mustafa and the narrator is present throughout the novel" (Raun). Another One of these elements involves the role of women in the novel. Mustafa is one character who  seems to see women as creatures that are perhaps not worthy of any notice for the most part. This is a very powerful theme in the novel and the following  paper addresses the role of women in Salihs novel from different perspectives. Mustafas Perception and Treatment of Women In first understanding how Mustafa sees women we look at his  past. According to one critic, "Born in 1898, the year in which the invading British army defeated the army of the Mahdist state and added Sudan to the colonial possessions  Of the British empire , Said did not know his father. He was raised by his mother, but this was not enough for him to have any particular emotions about  her, an early sign of emotional sterility and disdain for women however kind they may have been to him" (Mustafa Said-ism). He was lucky, early on in his life,  to demonstrate a very acute intelligence and diligence. This earned "earned him a chance to travel to Egypt in pursuit of more education" (Mustafa Said-ism). It is here that he,  once again, seems to illustrate a sense of disdain for women in general. "Said he meets with the Robinsons who showered him with love and provided him with something close
