Inhaling secondhand smoke has been determined to be  the "third leading cause of preventable death in the United States," as it constitutes a "major source of indoor air pollution" that contributes to "an estimated 53,000 deaths per year  among nonsmokers" (Hahn, et al 365). The most efficient and effective public health intervention that can be implemented to decease exposure to secondhand smoke is to formulate, implement and enforce  "smoke-free workplace policies," as such policies protect vulnerable populations who are in the vicinity of smokers and, therefore, exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke (Hahn, et al 365). The following examination  of literature illustrates the need for smoke-free policies to have a broader scope, as any exemptions allowed to these policies increases the health-risks of nonsmokers. Secondhand smoke is a  "mixture of almost 5000 chemical compounds," which contains 43 known carcinogens (Hall, et al 698). Emitted from the smoldering tip of a lit cigarette and also as the smoker  exhales, second smoke also contains "carbon monoxide...ammonia, nicotine, hydrogen cyanide, and sulfur dioxide" (Hall, et al 698). Children exposed to secondhand smoke are placed at greater risk for "acute respiratory  infections, exacerbations of asthma, and sudden infant death syndrome," while adults exposed to secondhand smoke are at greater risk for "coronary heart disease and lung cancer" (Hall, et al 698).  A report issued by the United States Surgeon Generals office in 2006 indicates that the number of chemicals in secondhand smoke that cause irritation and damage in the respiratory system
