Conclusion Introduction  "For years now, the insufficient state of security in American schools has captured headlines. The negative publicity spawned by school shootings like those at Columbine High School have cast a  pall over the school system and have generated repeated cries for reactions, reforms, and resolutions" (OConnell, 2002; p. 13). Short of hiring employees to observe students and keep a close  eye on any activity there seems to be little that schools can do. But, in this day of technological advances many schools are looking to technology as it relates to  security. We see these surveillance devices in banks, stores, and many other institutions and now we are seeing them in schools as well, implemented in the hopes of stopping serious  problems before they start. In the following paper we examine some of the technological security systems. Security and Technology in Schools In first examining this subject we look  at the statements made by a company involved in the production of such devices. In this simple illustration we note that the company does not believe that technology concerning security  in schools can solve all problems, but that it can be used to benefit schools if used properly: "National School Safety and Security Services regularly receives questions about the use  of metal detectors, surveillance cameras and other security equipment in schools while conducting our school security assessments and our school safety and crisis preparedness training, as well as from media  officials covering stories on related issues. While we are not anti-equipment or anti-technology in our approach (like some school safety consultants), we do believe that the use of equipment and
