"A prolific writer and a hit with literary critics, Atwood became internationally famous after the popular and  critical success of her 1984 novel, The Handmaids Tale (made into the 1990 movie starring Natasha Richardson, Robert Duvall and Faye Dunaway). She began her career in the 1960s, teaching  English and at first publishing poetry, short stories and literary criticism" (Anonymous Margaret Atwood: Writer margaretatwood.html). Bearing in mind her success, and her position in the literary world we  examine Atwood as a short story writer. In the following paper we focus on her compilation of stories titled "Dancing Girls" and examine what she has done for the development  of the short story, what techniques she appears to use, and the prominence of the short story in her life. We also examine how she fairs as a short story  writer, in the publics eye, and discuss whether she is really a short story writer or a novelist. Atwood and the Short Story In terms of what Atwood  has done for the development of the short story it must first be honestly stated that her short stories are not what she is known for. This particular compilation of  stories was written prior to her incredible fame and would thus indicate that she offered little that was new to the world of short fiction. But, as one anonymous reviewer  from Amazon.com states, "Short fiction is the backbone of the literary world; every great writer finds solace in the concept of short fiction--of great ideas being written succinctly" and Atwoods  are "long enough to give you glimpses of her genius and yet short enough to appreciate" (002-4276357-7674462).
