    cant even kill the odd spider that wanders into my apartment. Her whole body shook uncontrollably. The truth of her self-revelation stared back at Lindsey McVane from the 8x12 mirror  on her medicine cabinet door. This was the face of a killer. This is a typical beginning for a suspense novel or short story. Generally speaking, the student will  want to begin with the action, cut to the chase, so to speak, and then introduce the problem, all within the first few pages (in the case of a short  story) or first fifty pages of a longer work of fiction. There are several ways in which a writer may achieve this effect, that sit on the edge of your  chair type of tension. However, there are critical elements that MUST be present, it can be said, in ANY work of fiction. Firstly, the writer must create a character that  is multi-dimensional. Who is this person? What does he or she want? How hard will it be to get that thing that he/she wants? Why cant they have it right  away? Why should the reader care at all about the character or the situation that the character is in? The initial paragraph should be what is termed, the hook. In  other words it compels the reader to say, "What?!" or "Whoah. What happens next?" or "Wow, how did this happen?" Any combination of these questions that present themselves in  a readers mind (such as the opening paragraph of this paper) should be sufficient to grab the reader and bring them into the writers/characters world. This hook could be as  simple as a haunting quote from some literary great. It could also be an internal or external dialogue by one or more characters, as if one walked in on the
