    decimated Earth in "Dawn" and human beings are almost extinct. "People" from another planet arrive and set about saving the humans and restoring the environment of Earth. They place most  of the humans into suspended animation so they can begin the laborious processes required for the planets recovery. However, the aliens have their own agenda and that is to enslave  humans to meet their own needs. Themes of slavery are constantly present in "Dawn" and present a ways to reconsider the horrors and absolute subjugation that is slavery. Bibliography lists  3 sources. Introduction Octavia Butler is too often dismissed as "only" writing science fiction. Such a statement does not really suit Butlers novels and short  stories. Instead, it would be more accurate to describe her as writing about people with unusual talents or backgrounds in remarkably unusual circumstances and settings. Themes of betrayal, destruction of  the environment by the actions of human beings, skepticism bout religion, and problems that are the result of the human desire for power structures and organization are often present in  her writing. In fact, it would be more accurate to describe her writing as being about societys problems and how they might be handled. In her 1987 novel "Dawn," Butler  presents the theme of slavery in the service of another beings hierarchy and sense of survival and order. "dawn" became the first book in a trilogy, followed by "Adulthood  Rites" (1988) and "Imago" (1989). Close to Extinction Nuclear war has decimated the earth in "Dawn" and human beings are almost extinct. "People" from another planet arrive and set
