information on using this paper properly! Introduction Octavia Butler is too often dismissed as "only" writing science fiction. Such a statement does not really suit Butlers novels and short
stories. Instead, it would be more accurate to describe her as writing about people with unusual talents or backgrounds in remarkably unusual circumstances and settings. Themes of betrayal, destruction of
the environment by the actions of human beings, skepticism bout religion, and problems that are the result of the human desire for power structures and organization are often present in
her writing. In fact, it would be more accurate to describe her writing as being about societys problems and how they might be handled. In her 1987 novel "Dawn," Butler
presents the theme of slavery in the service of another beings hierarchy and sense of survival and order. "dawn" became the first book in a trilogy, followed by "Adulthood
