Even those businesses that are linked through e-mail are relying on e-commerce,  a rather primitive version by todays standards. Small and medium-size businesses are making great use of cyberspace for business as well (Daniel  et al, 2002). Research by Oftel during 2000 showed that 49 percent of SMEs in the United Kingdom were connected in some way to the Internet, with 20 percent more  expected to go online in the future (Daniel et al, 2002). In addition, IDC research is predicting that, in the United States, small business web sites will increase from 2.8  million in 2000 to 4.5 million in 2003 (Davis, 2001). Despite these statistics however, not all small businesses are quite so enamoured  with e-commerce, mainly because it is still new and untried. While some SMEs have realized benefits from e-commerce, others are stepping back and taking a "wait-and-see" attitude. Still others somewhat  nervous about the demise of e-tailers such as etoys.com, are convinced that e-commerce is a sure pathway to a business demise. This  paper will attempt to define e-commerce and analyze its impact on small businesses. The paper will also discuss the general attitude of small business toward e-commerce.
