    definition, however, what is not evident in the definition is that, while social control is necessary, it is prone to abuses by those in power. Jeffery Reimans book, The  Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison, examines this idea, showing that social control has a dark side. The experts debate at  length as to the extent which social order is coercive and to what extent it is cooperative. Do those in power really call the shots? The answer would seem to  be more complex than a simple yes or no. Consider that Gandhi convinced thousands to formally protest against rules which were viewed as being unjust. Thus, those who were in  governmental control were not determining In this respect, social order was challenged, chaos existed for a time being, then was changed to suit the majoritys wishes.  However, social order is also determined by influence, it can be argued. Check out any major news service in the country. Who are they owned by?  Large industries who have nothing in common with the news or entertainment industry. So why own a newspaper company, radio station or television station (and most of them own all  three types)? Control of the types of perspectives that are allowed into the cultures mainstream. They manipulate this so that their products are positioned in such a way as to  make the public believe that they need these products, or to drive demand for a certain segment of the population.
