SA143rac.rtf So much in the United States goes to race, from ones social identity to ones political and economic voice. Sociologists and demographers look at race as a
factor in explaining everything and in general, one can look at things that go on in the world and see what W.E.B. DuBois called the color line. And while it
seems that everything is categorized in terms of race, analyzed in terms of race and judicially decided upon in terms of race, some ask whether or not the concept of
race is real. While that is a valid point, others might consider such a statement ludicrous. After all, everyone has grown up with affirmative action, learning about the horrors of
slavery and understanding racial identity. They have noticed black neighborhoods and white flight and that there is a difference in attitude in certain neighborhoods. One can just tell the race
of a person by looking, so how can one say that race is not real? First, the idea that one can discern race visually is not true, and at
least not at first glance. There are many light-skinned black people in the world for example, and then there are many people of mixed racial origin. Mariah Carey for instance,
is a product of a mixed marriage. With a white mother and black father, it is hard to tell exactly what race she is by looking. In some ways, she
appears to be white, but a closer look will reveal her black roots. Yet, to say something like that negates the point that what is being discerned is a social
