sodium plays an important role, since it is often responsible for raising the blood pressure rates of individuals. Therefore, a clear correlation can be drawn between sodium intake and  high blood pressure, which therefore necessitates an understanding of how to reduce sodium levels and the reasons why sodium is so harmful physiologically.  High blood pressure is a serious health concern given that it affects about 50 million Americans (Sodium Intake and High Blood Pressure, 2003). High blood pressure  is credited as being the leading cause of stroke and plays an important role in heart attack, heart failure, and kidney failure (Sodium Intake and High Blood Pressure, 2003).  The elderly and African Americans are at particularly high risk when it comes to suffering from high blood pressure (Sodium Intake and High Blood Pressure, 2003). Salt contributes significantly  to the problem, since it causes blood pressure to raise in many susceptible individuals (Sodium Intake and High Blood Pressure, 2003).  Many studies have indicated that low-salt diets result in lowered blood pressure, but science has been slow to understand why some people are very responsive to sodium while others  are not (Sodium Intake and High Blood Pressure, 2003). Guidelines indicate that Americans should not consume more that 2,400 mg of sodium per day (Sodium Intake and High Blood  Pressure, 2003). Sodium is a component of salt, and therefore sodium levels are drastically influenced by the foods we eat  (Salt, Sodium, and High Blood Pressure, 2003). The effects of sodium from food can be harmful if the kidneys are not functioning properly (Salt, Sodium, and High Blood Pressure,
