would be in direct and constant contact with consumers, and businesses and suppliers failing to embrace the new way of doing things would find themselves abandoned by more demanding and
increasingly impatient customers. Obviously, they were correct in their predictions. More and better possibilities for computer-based operations continued to present themselves to a point at which the best and
latest software applications were in as much demand as the latest CD by the current pop idol is in demand by teenagers. And as more and better forms of software
are created, the opportunity for and profitability of software piracy and counterfeiting has increased at an alarming rate. The Desirability of Software Software, in general, can be classified by several
categories based on the types of work done the software accomplishes. It is worth noting that the two primary software categories are operating systems (system software), which control the workings
of the computer, and application software, which addresses the multitude of tasks for which people use computers. It is the system software that keeps the computer running and functioning.
It enables the many "invisible" chores of a computer such as maintaining disk files. Application software is what performs actual functions needed by the person using the computer such
as word processing, database management, graphic manipulation, desktop publishing, and so on. Two additional categories that are neither system nor application software, although they contain elements of both, are network
software, which enables groups of computers to communicate, and language software, which provides programmers with the tools they need to write programs. Because software is indispensable to every business, large
