company saw a loss in 2001. This loss was the result of different factors including economic changes, technological changes and developments from competitors changing the market place. The company is  undergoing change, but this will take time to produce results. Solutia have realised that the changes presents opportunities, and with a strategy of aggressive growth as well as decreased cost  to create a better value chain the company is seeking to restore profitability to the satisfaction of shareholders though the corporate attitude that is customer focused using products that are  highly differentiated to seek to satisfy the customer needs. This is summarised in the mission statement and seen in the way that changes are made internally. Mission Statement  All organisations will have a purpose. The purpose may be the reason that the company was created, as with companies such as Cadbury  Schweppes or British Airways, or it may be a new purpose that has emerged due to changes in the commercial environment, such as with the Mobile Telephone Manufacture Nokia, which  started life as a wood products company (Thompson, 1998). The role of a mission statement is to sum up the aims and attitudes of a company in a single well  phrased paragraph. A mission statement should be a maximum of a paragraph in length, and should be able to define and explain what it is the company does in a  clear and concise manner (Radtke, 1998). This should also include what the company plans or the future in very general terms. Such as to be the best, or to be  the most reliable, as well as reflecting the values and nature of the work the organisation undertakes, therefore, a statement simply to be the best is not enough.
