    Morrisons literary characters. That each conflict intertwines with one another speaks volumes about the difficulties these characters face in everyday circumstances, as well as the constant battles they must  endure in trying to overcome years of physical and emotional pain. When discussing the aspects of domestic abuse as they relate to Song of Solomon, the student will want to  address that issues of manhood and masculinity are at the forefront of domestic violence. Men like Macon, who feels a distinct sense of importance and control over his wife,  family and virtually all who come in contact with him, tend to have a greater incidence of spousal abuse than do those who regard their mates in a more equal  and respectful manner. While domestic abuse occurs in every corner of the world, it is much more readily acceptable in those households where women like his wife are considered  second class citizens. "Macon didnt wait to put his fork down. He dropped it on the table while his hand was on its way across the bread plate  becomming the fist he smashed into her jaw. Milkman hadnt planned any of it, but he had to know that one day, after Macon hit her, hed see his  mothers hand cover her lips as she searched with her tongue for any broken teeth...and that on that day he would not be able to stand it...You touch her again,  one more time, and Ill kill you. Macon was so shocked at being assaulted he could not speak. He had come to believe, after years of creating respect  and fear wherever he put his foot down, after years of being the tallest man in every gathering, that he was impregnable. Now he crept along the wall looking
