looked at the stars and contemplated what they were and where they existed, mankind has had a very fantastic relationship with the universe that exists outside the field of earth.  Interestingly enough, a century ago people thought that traveling in space and actually landing on the moon was a ridiculous notion, though an intriguing one. Several decades ago, however, man  finally succeeded in landing on the moon and actually stepping foot upon that planet. Since then we have, as a nation and a planet, taken numerous steps to assure that  some form of space exploration continues. Despite economic conditions and an uncertainty about where to go, we have continued to dream and plan. In the following paper we provide a  brief examination of the history of space exploration and then present an examination of the future of space exploration. A Brief History While a great deal of dreaming  took place in the past, regarding space exploration, it was not until satellites were launched into space in the 1950s that we truly began to understand that space exploration was  a very real possibility. And, the most noted accomplishments were those of the 1960s when we orbited the earth, flew to the moon, and actually landed on the moon. As  one individual illustrates, "The possibility of humans surmounting gravity and exiting the atmosphere was remote until the 20th century, when scientists first became proficient at controlling the explosive power of  burning chemicals to fire projectiles into the heavens. The landing of Apollo 11 on the moon in 1969 proved that humans could send astronauts outside the atmosphere to another body  and return them home to Earth" (Salkever, 2000; p. 3). It seemed that the battle between the United States and the Soviet Union was over in regards to space
