A second  source would be your district level special education director.] The first source contacted was the district level special education director. This individual keeps current on all laws and regulations as  they are issued by state and federal legislation and from our state department of education. Further, this individual is involved in compliance audits for the state department of education, i.e.,  he/she conducts compliance audits of other school districts within the state. The director identified these issues as hot topics and compliance issues: assessing English language learners for learning disabilities,  transition services for high school graduates, keeping up with all the paperwork and support for regular education teachers. The next contact was to the special education compliance department at our  state department of education. This individual trains all compliance officers and reviews all compliance audits. This person is also involved in helping districts provide services that go beyond compliance. He  also identified assessing English language learners for learning disabilities as a major issue. He also commented that regular education teachers express significant concern about trying to meet the needs of  a diverse classroom as well as students with learning disabilities. Parent involvement was another issue mentioned. 2.
