probation is the decision of the judge who will weigh a variety of factors. Parole is given at the discretion of the parole board. Whether one receives either, the programs
are very similar but vary qualitatively around the nation. Further, many states and local justice systems have created programs for special offender populations. One example comes from Pennsylvania,
a state that makes use of a variety of types of programs. One program is aligned with something called Day Reporting Centers. The Day Reporting Center is something that serves
to oversee criminals, and is considered an alterative to imprisonment ("PBPP Special Programs," 2006). This program is designed for violators who have difficulty reconnecting with society, and do not have
the general life skills to become successful in the real world ("PBPP Special Programs," 2006). Yet, these offenders are not seen as a significant risk in respect to re-offending
("PBPP Special Programs," 2006). Pennsylvania also has a program called Fatherhood Initiative to help parolees become better fathers ("PBPP Special Programs," 2006). The state of Tennessee also has several programs.
One program is designed to treat those who have broken probation or parole and is called Boot Camp/Technical Violator Program ("Field Service Subsections," 2006). With many available programs for offenders,
what might be done with a particularly problematic criminals? II. Case Study: Robin Glassio Robin Glassio is a seventeen year old boy who had dropped out of high
school at the age of sixteen. He was planning to work in his uncles construction business and claimed that he did not like school. Living at home in New Jersey
with his mother and step-brother, Robin began to get into trouble with the law. He was caught with marijuana and placed on probation, but then, it seems as if his
