dual realities to the universe - and therefore, to all living things. Plato believed these two realities coexisted and one was perfect while the other was imperfect.  Plato applied his Essentialism theory to the nature of species as well and suggested that all living things had a dualistic reality  also. This reality consisted of both the perfect and the imperfect - just as in the case of the universe. Many  people within the sciences agreed with Platos theory of applying Essentialism to living things and many continue to believe this theory has merit even today. Naturally, there are those  who are also opposed to the theory and believe it doesnt serve to explain or describe the nature of species at all. Essentialism  Plato is the philosopher responsible for developing the idea of essentialism (Plato and the Perfect Universe, 2002). His theory supposes that the universe is perfect  which makes the imperfections of the world all the more obvious (Plato and the Perfect Universe, 2002). Therefore, as Plato thought this opposition over, he came to the conclusion  that there are actually two different universes which coexist (Plato and the Perfect Universe, 2002). According to Plato, there is the Essential Universe and the Perceived Universe (Plato and  the Perfect Universe, 2002). The Essential Universe was the perfect one - the one which Plato felt for sure must exist and the one which he indeed believed  existed (Plato and the Perfect Universe, 2002). The Perceived Universe was the imperfect one - a fa?ade of sorts which was the only one apparent to the many people
