analysis, formulating the strategy, implementing the strategy, initiating control systems to monitor progress (NetMBA.com, 2007). The situation analysis provides knowledge and insight about where the organization is in terms of  its mission and objectives (NetMBA.com, 2007). There are many different tools that can be used in this phase of the process, including a PEST analysis, Porters five forces framework, and/or  a SWOT analysis (NetMBA.com, 2007). Strategic planning is a dynamic process, which means that it is ongoing (NetMBA.com, 2007). It is not a one-time exercise with no follow-through. As situations  change, the planning to meet those changes must be engaged. For example, when payment options for health care providers changed many years ago, these providers had to change their strategies  as well as their operations. Kunders (2005) commented that all organizations operate in a "highly competitive and volatile world . . . [and] in uncertain environments." There are many forces  that impact organizations, including external ones over which the organization has no control (Kunders, 2005). All organizations have a mission, a reason for being. Strategic planning focuses on that  mission and defines objectives that are complementary to the mission (Kunders, 2005). When these are determined, the organization needs to think about the steps or actions they need to take  and activities in which they need to engage to achieve the objectives (Kunders, 2005). Different experts suggest different approaches for strategic planning in hospitals. For instance, Darby (2003) suggested three  major phases in the process. The first is to gather information about what is currently happening in the organization, this information is obtained from internal and external stakeholders (Darby, 2003).  The second phase is to collaboratively set goals and objectives and the third phase is to determine the exact tactics that will be used to achieve the objectives (Darby, 2003).
