In an ongoing effort to combat the negative aspects of such overwhelming work-related tension, it is critical that prison guards learn to manage their stress levels. In general, people
do not know how to allow their bodies to relax, which is a natural method of stress control; rather, guards are all too often in a constant state of tension
with no available release for their penned up stress, which becomes a significant concern for their overall health. Not only can stress influence the onset of the disease, but
mental anxiety can also inhibit effective healing, as well.1 "Disease is essentially a reaction between individuals and the stresses and adverse factors of their physical, biological and social milieu,
and how we respond is governed by genetic make-up."2 The relationship between stress and health is unmistakable; indeed, the correlation that exists between
the two entities is so strong that ones very existence hinges upon the ability to effectively balance good stress with the bad. What could possibly be good about stress?
It is a natural motivator as well as a barometer of life. If an individual lives each day without some simple form of stress, the mind/body connection is
