    greater recognition of pressure in the workplace resulting in employers seeking to reduce the stress levels suffered by their staff. Stress may come from a variety of sources, work is  only one, however, even when the source is external to the workplace environment, the manifestation will be revealed in work rates productivity and performance of those who are stressed. In  recent studies it has been found that between 70% and 90% of individuals find life stressful whether inside or outside work (Anonymous, 2001).With an incidence level this high  it is unsurprising that stress has become as focal point in the workplace with the use of counselling forming the central focus of many initiatives to reduce stress. The motives  may not be altruistic, with employers needing to protect their businesses and to maximise the output whilst minimise disruptions. There may also be genuine concern, however, it is the role  of stress that is now receiving the attention and all actions taken to revile it are likely to make use of counselling at some level within the stress management systems.  To examined this the problem and the system needs t be considered this can then be used as a base line agsist which stress management initiatives in the workplace can  be measured. There are many causes of stress, in the wake of September the Eleventh stress level in the US have been seen  to increase, indicating the impact that environmental macro factors can have on stress levels (Daniels, 2002). Family and personal matters are also great causes of stress. However, other stress factors  may also include the state of the economy, that last major increase in work related stress occurred when the economy was in decline a decade ago (Daniels, 2002).
