    emotional realities, it is also a story about the power of friendship between Sula and Nel. Anyone who has had an intensely close friend will recognize how Sula and Nel  are powerfully representative of two people who are very different yet combine to make a whole individual for they are, in many ways, soul mates. In the following paper we  examine the development of the relationship between Sula and Nel in Toni Morrisons novel "Sula." Sula and Nel In the beginning we readily note that Sula and Nel  come from very different backgrounds. While Sulas life is one that is less than perfect in terms of economic stability, Nels is much more rigidly controlled and far wealthier. From  the beginning they compliment each other in these differences and seem to understand that when they meet and "felt the ease and comfort of old friends. Because each had discovered  that they were neither white nor male, and that all freedom and triumph was forbidden to them, they have set about creating something else to be" (Morrison 52). For example,  Sula would go to Nels house to sit in a red velvet sofa, "still as dawn" (Morrison 29). Nel, on the other hand, loved the uncontrolled nature of Sulas house  where people were loud as they danced and sung amidst a house that was less than perfectly organized. As we can see in this very simple beginning, a beginning that  sets the stage and creates the foundation of the narrative, we have two young girls who help make the other whole. After this introduction, the portion of Morrisons book that  discusses their childhood, we are taken in another direction as the two girls are grown. This shifts the narrative from the frame narrative for many other people are now brought
