    article title and author(s) are used as headings. #1: Case Study of Leadership Practices and School-Community Interrelationships in High-Performing, High-Poverty, Rural California High Schools by Marcia Masumoto and Sharon Brown-Welty.  The purpose of this study was to identify which leadership practices improve student success in rural schools in California. The study asked two questions: which leadership practices are used in  high-performing rural schools in California, and how do leaders of high-performing schools with high poverty rates interact with the community. The researchers were specifically investigating the types of transformational leadership  practices are used in rural communities faced with high levels of poverty. This was a qualitative study. Specifically, a case study methodology was used that consisted of interviews.  The researchers included schools that met certain criteria: they had to be rural, the had to be identified as high-poverty, they had to be identified as high-performing, and the principals  of the schools had to have been in that position for more than one year. Researcher interviews school personnel, including superintendents, principals, teachers, counselors, advisors, and community members, including business  leaders and parents across three separate schools. Data analysis revealed specific commonalities among all three successful schools. These included clear and focused instruction in each school; set standards for performance  of both students and teachers; high expectations of students and teachers; strong teachers; and numerous support systems for students who have individual needs.
