lines. The issue is sustainability which refers to becoming a green institution. Several years ago, the Los Angeles Community College District adopted a proposal to become a sustainable institution (Hall,  2008). This is a nationwide project and the Chancellor of Los Angeles is a member of the Steering Committee to develop a climate action plan (ACUPCC Steering Committee, 2009). Implementation  requires drastic and dramatic changes on each campus. Changes are large in size, broad in scope and extremely complex. The District has adopted policies that will lead to energy-efficient new  buildings that will use alternative energy sources such as geo-thermal, solar panels, and hydrogen (Hall, 2008). They are also retrofitting existing buildings to be more energy-efficient. The plan calls for  colleges to offer curriculum that focuses on renewable energy and sustainability, in general (Hall, 2008). The changes being investigated are ones that require a changes in mindset, changes in behaviors,  and changes in attitudes. A report from the Academy for Educational Development stated that community colleges were well-positioned to be at the forefront of this new challenge because these institutions  are so involved in preparing the population for different occupations (Feldbaum & States, 2009). While many of the actions to be taken are at the district-level, each campus needs  to work towards the goals by implementing the plans themselves. Challenges include: How to change everyones mindset regarding energy consumption? How to design a curriculum that focuses on sustainability? Where  to find instructors to teach those classes? What kinds of things can faculty, staff and students do now to reduce their carbon footprint? One example is reducing waste which the  committee calls Waste Minimization (Dautremont-Smith et al., 2009). This Waste Minimization component is significantly different than simple recycling. Some of the many activities involved in the Waste Minimization component are:
