    Competition was mostly local (at most, regional in nature), and the workforce consisted primarily of men who had women at home caring for children and doing the housework. It was  okay, at the time, for companies to shut down near the dinner hours and for workers to return to their homes (and even for workers to have their weekends off  - although there were times during which people did have to go into work on an occasional Saturday or Sunday). Times have  changed however, and with those changing times comes the required change in office hours. Technical advances have meant instant communication - and with that is the demand of clients needing  things yesterday, if not before. Instead of the nine-to-five day, therefore, employers must be a great deal more flexible with their time, allowing workers to set different shifts when possible  and even allowing them to work at home, if the position permits. This is where the employer comes in, and must be responsible for setting a flexible work schedule that  takes into account work/personal obligations as well as increasing global competitiveness. First, there is the issue that more women have entered the  workplace since the middle of the 20th century. Theyve come into the workplace for a variety of reasons, ranging from self-fulfillment to the fact that families need more money to  live on these days. But women are also still responsible for child-rearing and housework as well (although men are more and more becoming involved with this part of the personal  life). There are times, however, when a woman needs to be at home with her sick child - or simply needs to be at home when the child comes home
