Introduction Tate and Lyle are an international company supplying a  range of ingredients for cooking to both the domestic and commercial users. Best known for sugar the firm operates in a fast paced environment that is susceptible to changes in  the economic environment. The mission statement of the firm reads "We will grow by uniting our businesses and developing partnerships to create the worlds leading renewable ingredients business. We  will build a consistent global portfolio of distinctive, profitable, high value solutions in products and services for our customers" (Tate and Lyle, 2009). This indicates the firms focus, not only  in the core aspects of their operations, but also on the financial matters and performance in the way that the firm defines a main purpose as being profitable. Looking  at the firm in 2009 it is possible to see how they form has competed, the strategies that have used and the challenges that they face as well as their  financial performance. The paper will start by looking at Tate and Lyle who they are and what they do, then perform a SWOT analysis and look at the key challenges  before assessing the financial performance. 2. Company Background The history of Tate & Lyle starts in 1859 when one of the founders  Henry Tate went into a partnership with John Wright refining sugar. The partnership ended and when Henry Tate was joined by his sons the company became known as Henry Tate
