Strategic planning is complex because it is intended to help an organization respond to changes in the environment (American Express,  nd). The literature has consistently promoted the idea that team-based strategic planning adds value to all aspects of the companys business. there are a number of approaches to teams, or,  more specifically, to establishing teams. Some of these include: cross-functional teams; senior executive teams; middle management teams; and self-directed teams. To gain an overview, the following table identifies different  types of teams, typical size and the advantages and disadvantages, if any, of each. Each will be more fully described later. Type of Team Size Advantages Disadvantages Executive 3-5 Easy  to gain fast consensus No ownership among employees Cross-functional 10-15 Each function in organization is represented May be difficult to overcome territoriality of members Multi-level Any Represents all levels  of employees As above, territoriality is a problem. Also, members may not know enough about the organization to make sound decisions. Team-based strategic planning involves planning, organizing, accepting  responsibility for tasks and outcomes, and assignment of tasks (Ravenscroft, n.d.). Executive teams are self-explanatory. These teams are comprised of members of the executive team. Since it is a  smaller team and since executives tend to have similar goals for the company, it is often a great deal easier to make decisions regarding the goals and necessary action steps  for the companys employees. This team is not representative of the entire organization and thus, it is more difficult to have employees at all levels buy in to the goals  that are established. Multi-level teams deal with the opposite issues. this might be so large, it is unruly and real teamwork is impossible. It would take a very long time
