Relevance of the research to the field: An understanding of causative factors in terms of crime is certainly desirable.  Criminology is an important subject. After all, peoples lives are destroyed by criminals and it pays to evaluate causative factors. It is not as if criminals come from  a foreign domain. Rather, they are the children of ordinary individuals and so criminality ought to be studied in respect to etiology. Many researchers have done so. Centerwall (1993) reports  on a variety of studies that relate to children and television viewing and criminal acts. Some studies involve people from earlier generations in obscure settings where television was nonexistent. Then,  another group with television was compared and contrasted to the original group. Such methods have the benefit of leaving the children in a natural setting. However, a drawback is that  such methods do not allow for a controlled study where several variables are considered. If one is embarking on research, and designing a project, one might want to utilize a  controlled study that includes data from correctional facilities coupled with questionnaire results provided to the juvenile inmates.
