the Democrats for the last twenty years. This is due to many factors, but many say it was just time for Republicans to have their due. Some contend
that it was the overthrow of Republican E. J. Davis in 1873 that was the beginning of an era of the Republican Party dominance that would continue until the 1990s.
When the Democratic Party split between two more "conservative and liberal ideologues in the 1950s and 1960s" (Role of parties in Texas 2002, PG) it was the beginning of the
end of the Democratic Party at least in this state, and it is felt that this was the beginning of the Republican Party platforms in the state. Republicans began to
make inroads especially strongly along about the late 1950s and 1960s in both presidential and U.S. Senate elections. Texas came to be known as widely a Republican State rather
than a Democratic one. The election of Bill Clements in 1978 and that of George W. Bush in 1994 signaled the beginning of a two-party state in Texas.
