Bryan Babcock August 2001 -- properly  Introduction If we are to ask ourselves how artwork functions as a text, it is first necessary to determine what is "text?" We tend to think of it  as printed words on a page. Yet text may refer to scholastic material, or sacred writing, however, it can also serve as a "theme," or a "topic."  It is this last definition, that we shall use in this discussion. Post-modernism According to Strickland (1992), the artists who termed themselves "modernists," felt that the "idea of  an art object was a hand made original" piece of work. Post-modernists did not feel that they "had to be limited" to this concern, and began the process of  appropriation. This meant that they took bits and pieces of either once used materials, or even art images themselves and re-arranged or re-appropriated them. In this way they
