Neither Jane nor Mark Studdock appear to be overly heroic. Mark wants to be, but in a way that he will define at some point when he  can take the time to do it. For the moment, he is most concerned with becoming a member of the "inner ring" of the community in which he and  Jane live. Jane is pursuing doctoral studies and misses the job she used to hold. She has allowed boredom to overtake her,  to the point that its depressive tendencies interfere with her studies. Both Mark and Jane are rather superficial in their own rights, though  there is more to Jane than readily meets the eye. Of the two, Jane will prove to be the most heroic. Marks Ambitions  Mark seeks to be highly visible in his job and to become politically important at the university. He is a Fellow of Sociology at the Bracton College of  Edgestow University, having become a sociologist apparently because he is not quite able to grasp the depths of other subjects. He is a committed academian and appears to want  to study ideas. His greatest shortcoming in this respect is that he is rather obtuse and it is quite difficult for him to have an idea of his own.  Sociology is "safe" in that it is a discipline of theories that he can merely accept without the need to argue the validity of any. Working in sociology  allows him to maintain a distance from individuals. This is not to say that sociology has no value, of course, only that Mark appears to have settled on sociology
