He  was diligent in his attempts to bring understanding to the origins of architecture. What is so interesting is to note how his  work lives on. He was so talented at combining architecture with spiritual philosophy which resulted in his own brand of architectural theory. His ideas were unique and clearly  his own, and their influence has been significant. In this way, he has impacted the future of architecture as those who have been influenced by his work carry his  sentiments into their own work, and so on. His ideas about space result from the intertwining of nature and humanity.  Walls then become an extension of nature itself, and are actually mans expression of nature. In this way, as man creates, Van Der Laan maintains that he does  so in the likeness of the creator himself. Dom Hans Van Der Laan and His Ideas About Space Dom Hans  Van Der Laan was a Benedictine monk who lived from 1904-1991. He was born in Holland and both his father and several of his brothers were also architects.  After he was nearly through with his architecture education, he decided to give it up and join the Benedictine monks. He believed that architecture lacked the fundamental principles necessary  to appeal to his sensibilities.
