Introduction The first thing the student writing about the  concept of "sacredness" should understand is that it is not a wholly subjective construct that is only based on one particular groups definition of what is and is not "holy,"  "revered," or religious law. It is, instead an outline of the principles or paths to be followed that govern the movement by one person or a group toward spiritual enlightenment.  It is thought to be worthy of religious reverence and fundamentally inviolable. It is generally thought to have been divinely inspired. And, it is virtually always related to transformation, enlightenment,  and love. Another distinguishing feature of a sacred text is its generosity to humanity. However, it is remarkably easy for any student studying the topic to become caught up  in questions such as: How does each tradition make its enduring statements? What exactly is meant by a text? What are the principal sacred texts of the various religions,  and what forms do they take? What are the liturgical, intellectual, political, and ritual uses of sacred texts in the different traditions? What will best serve the student researching such  concepts is an understanding that "sacred" is taking a broad-based approach in understanding how the "sacred" has been defined and how that then applies to the consideration that a particular  text may also be thought of as "sacred."
